I think this dream has a very positive message for you: I agree with the comment about salt being a preservative. Followers of Christ have been portrayed as the, "Salt of the Earth," and so off the top, I think you and your husband are among those.
Land is valuable, nurturing, stable, grounding, enduring, and is often synonymous with "home." It would seem that whatever you have been thinking or talking about doing in your spiritual development, is being encouraged, and you are being shown what has real, lasting value, which is different from what most people may think, because you have "eyes to see, and ears to hear," and God is showing you your right direction and Who to listen to, as well as the outcome you can expect.
Since dreams can be understood to have multiple levels of meaning, perhaps you are also thinking of buying land, or moving, or making some other changes, and if so, the same message applies.
I've heard a lot lately on Atlas Salt Mines, as they found a large source in Newfoundland. Apparently the US has shipped in salt from Chile and N. Africa.
15 operating salt mines in N America
No new N Amer. mines in 20 yrs
In addition to road salt and food seasoning, salt has always been used as a preservative.
The space leftover from mining is often used for storing hydrogen and gases.
In your dream, you saw miles of resources, while it appeared uncomfortable, uninhabitable to family.
Sometimes family relates to larger groups, like govt branches or denominations.
Ask God to pray through you, for things going on that you aren't fully aware of.... there may be decision-makers needing support (while their peers argue it's a wasteful idea.)
Last week I watched a vid on someone who bought an abandoned mining town -- it might be worth a look, to see if it had the same feeling.
A few days later, a newsy show reported on another ghost town being bought. I wonder if this is helping solve the west coast housing crisis.
I knew an auto engineer who tested cars on salt flats. Even on something deemed worthless for living, companies found it valuable for other purposes.

Stark, empty land stretching for miles. Potential mining -- salt used in manufacturing, as preservative, germ-killer/purifier, snow/ice melter, flavoring, keeping body mineralized... and it is cheap.
A basic natural substance for sustaining life. In abundance, in your dream.
Some salt flats were believed to be dried-up lakes. Previously stirring up life.
If the salt has lost its flavor... Matthew 5:13, Mark 9:50, Luke 14:34
Spiritually, you might be concerned about the many errors and flaws of the church in this last decade or two. Monetizing the gospel, entertaining in holy places, abuse cover-ups... the list goes on. The system is collapsing.
But your dream might show hope for Christendom -- the salt has not completely lost its flavor. There is still potential for God providing life and hope in a weary land. You and your husband saw it. Hopefully the next generation can appreciate it too, and rebuild His Church in a purer form.
