In Hebrew, the number 10 is written with the Hebrew letter Yod, which is the smallest letter of the Hebrew Aleph Bet, which looks a bit like our apostrophy. If that was associated with an 8 in some way, which in Hebrew is the letter chet ( ח ) , those two letters combined, the number 18, is the Hebrew word Chai, which means life.
